Arthur “Ted” Stenberg IV will return as Head Coach for the New Market Rebels for the 2022 season.
Then-Rebels President, and Valley Baseball League (VBL) Commissioner, Bruce Alger invited Stenberg to return, shortly after the 2021 season wrapped up.
Alger passed away on October 9, after a long battle against cancer.
“Bruce Alger knew college baseball as well as anyone in the mid-Atlantic and Southeast,” said Rebels President Mike Jones, “and we are especially pleased to carry out one of his last key decisions by having Ted back for another season as head coach.”
Stenberg led the Rebels to a 20-22 record in the 2021 campaign, good for fourth place in the North Division, then went 0-2 versus the eventual VBL champion Strasburg Express in the first round of the playoffs.
Stenberg had his eyes on the Valley League for the 2020 season, and was selected to be the Rebels head coach, but that season was cancelled due to the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Rebels RHP Reed Mascolo (Wake Forest) earned 2021 All-VBL Pitcher of the Year honors, with six starts, 34.2ip, 4-1 record, 42K/16BB, 2.85 ERA.
New Market lost some top talent during the 2021 season. Out to injury were: James Bell (Fresno CC, played 17 of the scheduled 42 games, .474BA); and RHP Greg Martinez (Louisiana Tech, three games started, 2-0, 19ip, 23K/2BB, 1.89 ERA). Two-way standout Jackson Lancaster (U. of Mo, 27 games, .371BA, 6HR, 23RBI; 9.2ip in relief, 20K/4BB, 4.65ERA) left to wait out the major league draft.
“I’m excited to be back for another season with the Rebels,” Stenberg said. “I learned a lot from Bruce [Alger]. I’m looking forward to applying all of those lessons, and with the roster expanding to 35 we can take more chances with young players who show a lot of potential.”
